Moesgaard Museum is looking for a leader to head up and mould a newly-formed Knowledge Section.

The museum needs solid and robust research as a foundation for its education and communication activities, and in the coming years the museum has the aim of increasing international involvement and impact through reinforced collaboration and cooperation, both internally in the museum and externally. The Head of the Knowledge Section must facilitate the attainment of these targets by promoting a positive environment for the section’s staff with cohesion and coherence between the many different tasks that are undertaken within this area.

Moesgaard Museum has high ambitions and is therefore looking for a visionary and inspiring leader with a solid professional base and a strong organisational profile who will take an active role in implementing the museum’s strategy plan, thereby fulfilling the high expectations laid out for the years to come.

This is a newly-created position reporting to the Museum Director, and you will be a member of the museum’s management team, which also includes the Head of Exhibitions and Visitor Experience, the Head of Administration, the Head of Buildings and Facilities and the Museum Director.

The position
As Head of the Knowledge Section you will have overall responsibility for the museum’s scientific disciplines, which comprise archaeology, ethnography/anthropology, history, archaeological science, conservation and digital cultural heritage. You will organise and manage the museum’s research, collections, archaeological regulatory tasks and activities funded from external sources in the fields of scientific analysis and digital cultural heritage.

Jointly with the Museum Director you will ensure the continued development of Moesgaard Museum and realise the museum’s strategic targets. You will forge a dynamic, inquisitive and efficient scientific environment that enjoys a solid working relationship with the rest of the museum and with Aarhus University, as well as with external partners.

An initial essential task will be the implementation of a new structure that creates a cohesive, dynamic and up-to-date organisation of the section’s work and concurrently ensures the solid, professional and qualified execution of tasks and assignments. It will be important to be able to generate energy and commitment in these tasks through for example the maintenance of a clearly defined and smoothly functioning management team.

You will have overall responsibility for personnel management of the section’s staff, which comprises about 50 academic employees and heads of department. An important part of the managerial task will be, jointly with the section’s heads of department, continually to evaluate skills and competences and requirements to develop these in the light of the museum’s strategy.

The Head of the Knowledge Section is responsible for the section’s budget and accounts and for ensuring the economic sustainability of the section’s activities and services. The Head of the Knowledge Section also has overall responsibility for the obligations undertaken by Moesgaard Museum as a state-approved museum according to the Museums Act. The Head of the Knowledge Section will play a central role in the museum’s collaboration with Aarhus University.
